Perdium is also broken out from the rate not added on top. They will break out the max the IRS will allow for living in the area and that money will not be taxed. Perdium is also only good for 1 yr. The IRS has a perdium chart to go by. I have it in spreadsheet form for the country.

not in all cases...when i worked out of town i was given a rate and if i lived more than 100 miles from the site per diem was available....i received it as a seperate check and yes after the first year they start taxing it as income

were you a contract "rental" employee working at one company through a head hunter or a direct employee sent out of town to work a specific project for them.

you are correct sir. But, what good is making $85/hr for 3 months and getting laid off for 6+ months. That money is good while it lasts but it doesn't last long. You can see this by how the rates have plummeted to rates from 10 yrs ago.

yeah they tightened up hard on the per diem while i was there and i heard they were even tougher when i left....when i was there they made you not only show proof of residency 100 miles away but proof of intown residency(lease or hotel bill) to make sure you weren't staying with friends and pocketing the money....heard when i left they were making you show meal receipts and only paying you the total of the receipts not just giving you a flat hourly per diem like when i was there....it was a gov't gig so that could be why it was diff too idk

engineers used to get paid good money to go out of town.....now the per diem is just enough to cover expenses and thats it. I went to Toronto for 7 months and had to drive up there from greenville and room with a coworker to be able to pay all the expenses. And they wonder why people give them the eat shit look when they ask you to go out of town to work.
